Spring is finally here. I have some exciting events coming up that I would like to share with you. Please take a moment to read about them below:

ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 43’S 2024 WOMEN OF THE YEAR
March is Women’s History Month. Every year, I recognize and celebrate remarkable women community leaders and activists from my district for their immense dedication toward making our community a better place. This year, it gives me great pleasure to honor Joana Reyes, Political Organizer at SEIU United Service Workers West (SEIU-USWW), and Verónica De Lara, Senior Political Organizer at SEIU-USWW.
JOANA REYES
Joana Reyes is a proud advocate from Assembly District 43, born to Salvadoran immigrants and a product of the San Fernando Valley. Joana received her education from local schools, including John H. Francis Polytechnic High School, and later earned a B.A. in Sociology and Public Policy from the University of California, Riverside. After graduation, she returned to her roots and dedicated herself to serving and improving her childhood neighborhoods. First as a Field Deputy and then as a Legislative Deputy for the Los Angeles City Council.
Joana champions immigrant rights policy at the federal, state, and local levels. She was formerly the Policy Manager at the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN-LA). Currently, she serves as a Political Organizer at SEIU-USWW, advocating for Janitors, Airport Workers, Security Guards, and Allied Entertainment Workers. Joana's relentless efforts focus on safeguarding workers' dignity and amplifying their political engagement.
In addition to her professional commitments, Joana actively contributes to her community. She serves on the Board of New Directions for Youth, which provides direct services and programs to youth and their families throughout the San Fernando Valley. Furthermore, she holds the position of Co-Chair of the Candidate Interview Committee for the Los Angeles County Democratic Party and is a delegate to the California Democratic Party for the 43rd Assembly District.
VERÓNICA DE LARA
Verónica De Lara is a community leader who was born and raised in the Northeast San Fernando Valley. She is the eldest daughter of immigrant parents and is proud of her Mexican and Guatemalan roots. She has over ten years of experience working in the public sector alongside community members at the grassroots level.
Verónica is a strong advocate for working families and currently works as a Senior Political Organizer at SEIU United Service Workers West. She spearheaded the organization's environmental justice campaign, which aims to prioritize airport workers' rights and fight for environmental protections at the intersection of labor and environmental justice movements.
In the San Fernando Valley, Veronica focuses on educating, organizing, and promoting civic engagement among young people through the San Fernando Valley Young Democrats. She currently serves on an all-women board as Vice President and has highlighted and uplifted community-based organizations that bring resources to their communities. She is also a member of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, where she serves on the resolutions committee, and the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley.
Verónica is deeply involved in the community and serves as a long-time member of the Cesar Chavez Commemorative Committee of the SFV. Through this committee, she has organized six annual local marches to honor the legacy of civil rights and labor movement leader César E. Chávez.
Apart from her professional role, Verónica sits on the Board of Directors for two non-profit organizations, Alcohol Justice and Pueblo y Salud, Inc. These organizations focus on advocating for public health and social justice-informed policies that address the health disparities in communities of color. Additionally, she has served as Vice President of the Arleta Neighborhood Council.
Verónica's educational journey includes earning a Master's in public administration from California State University of Los Angeles (Cal State LA) and three Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of California, Davis (UC Davis).

FREE TACOS & TAXES IN PANORAMA CITY
The tax filing deadline in California is April 15, 2024.
I am partnering with Golden State Opportunity and New Economics for Women to host our Tacos and Taxes Event at the Goodwill Community Center in Panorama City on Saturday, March 30, 2024, from 10 am to 2:30 pm. Community members are welcome to enjoy delicious free tacos and receive free tax filing assistance with certified tax preparers. Please take advantage of these excellent free services.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Individuals with income under $67,000
- Basic returns only
- Services are appointment-based

CÉSAR CHÁVEZ ANNUAL MARCH FOR JUSTICE IN PACOIMA
Join the César Chávez Commemorative Committee on Sunday, March 17 at 10 a.m. for the March for Justice in honor of César Chávez Day of Service at Pacoima Charter Elementary School.
Every year we gather to commemorate the enduring legacy of César Chávez, who was more than just a leader. He was a symbol of hope, resilience, and empowerment for farmworkers and marginalized communities across the nation. His tireless advocacy paved the way for significant strides in labor rights and social justice. From organizing boycotts to championing nonviolent protests, Chávez inspired millions to stand up against exploitation and oppression.
Let’s reaffirm our commitment towards building a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. See you there!
HOMELESS CONNECT DAY IN SAN FERNANDO
I am excited to announce the Homeless Connect Day that will be hosted in the City of San Fernando in partnership with LA Family Housing! Join us on Thursday, March 21 at Las Palmas Park, 505 S. Huntington St., San Fernando CA 91340 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. as we come together to make a meaningful impact on our community.
This one-day event is a beacon of hope, offering free one-stop services to families and individuals experiencing homelessness in the San Fernando Valley area.
My team will be in attendance to host Community Office Hours. We will provide information and assistance to anyone who has questions about state resources. Join us in extending compassion and aid to our neighbors experiencing homelessness. Together, we can make a difference!
FINANCIAL AID FOR COLLEGE
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) are open to students seeking higher education in the 2024-2025 school year.
The financial aid priority deadline for the 2024-2025 academic year is April 2, 2024.

MUJERES DEL AÑO
Marzo es el Mes de la Historia de la Mujer. Todos los años reconozco y celebro a mujeres líderes y activistas de mi distrito por su inmensa dedicación para hacer de nuestra comunidad un lugar mejor. Este año, me da un gran placer honrar a Joana Reyes, Organizadora Política de SEIU United Service Workers West (SEIU-USWW), y Verónica De Lara, Organizadora Política Senior de SEIU-USWW.
JOANA REYES
Joana Reyes es una orgullosa defensora del Distrito 43 de la Asamblea, hija de inmigrantes salvadoreños y producto del Valle de San Fernando. Joana recibió su educación en escuelas locales, incluida la escuela secundaria John H. Francis Polytechnic High School, y luego obtuvo una licenciatura en Sociología y Políticas Públicas de la Universidad de California, Riverside. Después de graduarse, regresó a sus raíces y se dedicó a servir y mejorar los vecindarios de su infancia. Primero, como Diputada de Campo, y luego como Diputada Legislativa por el Ayuntamiento de Los Ángeles.
Joana es una defensora de la política de derechos de los inmigrantes a nivel federal, estatal y local. Anteriormente fue Gerente de Políticas del Centro Centroamericano de Recursos (CARECEN-LA). Los incansables esfuerzos de Joana se centran en proteger la dignidad de los trabajadores y ampliar su compromiso político.
Además de sus compromisos profesionales, Joana contribuye activamente con su comunidad. Es miembro de la Junta de New Directions for Youth, que brinda servicios y programas directos a los jóvenes y sus familias en todo el Valle de San Fernando. Además, ocupa el cargo de Copresidenta del Comité de Entrevista de Candidatos del Partido Demócrata del Condado de Los Ángeles y es delegada del Partido Demócrata de California para el Distrito 43 de la Asamblea.
VERÓNICA DE LARA
Verónica De Lara es una líder comunitaria que nació y creció en el noreste del Valle de San Fernando. Es la hija mayor de padres inmigrantes y está orgullosa de sus raíces mexicanas y guatemaltecas. Tiene más de diez años de experiencia trabajando en el sector público junto a miembros de la comunidad a nivel de base.
Verónica es una firme defensora de las familias trabajadoras y actualmente trabaja como organizadora política senior en SEIU United Service Workers West. Ella ah liderado la campaña de justicia ambiental de la organización, cuyo objetivo es priorizar los derechos de los trabajadores aeroportuarios y luchar por la protección ambiental en la intersección de los movimientos de justicia laboral y ambiental.
En el Valle de San Fernando, Verónica se enfoca en educar, organizar y promover el compromiso cívico entre los jóvenes a través de los Jóvenes Demócratas del Valle de San Fernando. Actualmente forma parte de una junta compuesta exclusivamente de mujeres como vicepresidenta y ha destacado y mejorado las organizaciones comunitarias que aportan recursos a sus comunidades. También es miembro del Partido Demócrata del Condado de Los Ángeles, donde forma parte del comité de resoluciones, y del Partido Demócrata del Valle de San Fernando.
Verónica está profundamente involucrada en la comunidad y es miembro desde hace mucho tiempo del Comité Conmemorativo de César Chávez de la SFV. A través de este comité, ha organizado seis marchas locales anuales para honrar el legado del líder del movimiento laboral y de derechos civiles César E. Chávez.
Además de su función profesional, Verónica forma parte de la junta directiva de dos organizaciones sin fines de lucro, Alcohol Justice y Pueblo y Salud, Inc. Estas organizaciones se centran en abogar por políticas de salud pública y justicia social que aborden las disparidades de salud en las comunidades de color. Además, se ha desempeñado como Vicepresidenta del Consejo Vecinal de Arleta.
El recorrido educativo de Verónica incluye obtener una maestría en administración pública de la Universidad Estatal de California en Los Ángeles (CalState LA) y tres títulos de licenciatura en artes de la Universidad de California, Davis (UC Davis).

MARCHA ANUAL POR LA JUSTICIA DE CÉSAR CHÁVEZ EN PACOIMA
Únase al Comité Conmemorativo de César Chávez el domingo 17 de marzo a las 10 a.m. para la Marcha anual por la Justicia de César Chávez en la Escuela Primaria Chárter Pacoima.
Cada año nos reunimos para conmemorar el legado perdurable de César Chávez, quien fue más que un líder; era un símbolo de esperanza, resiliencia y empoderamiento para los trabajadores agrícolas y las comunidades marginadas de todo el país. Su incansable defensa allanó el camino para avances significativos en materia de derechos laborales y justicia social. Desde organizar boicots hasta defender protestas no violentas, Chávez inspiró a millones a levantarse contra la explotación y la opresión.
Reafirmamos nuestro compromiso con la construcción de un mundo en el que todos tengan la oportunidad de prosperar. ¡Nos vemos allí!

¡Estoy emocionado de anunciar el Día de Conexión para Personas sin Hogar que se llevará a cabo en la ciudad de San Fernando en asociación con LA Family Housing!
