Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month it is important to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Hispanic and Latinx individuals throughout U.S. history. This month recognizes the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries. Let's celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures, histories, and achievements that make our community vibrant. In Assembly District 43, we will always cherish the trailblazers who helped pave the way for Latinos to have equal opportunities.

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week

As we progress in the academic year, we must remain informed about the current conditions affecting our schools in California. In this spirit, I highlight an important event dedicated to fostering our children's healthy, drug-free lifestyle: Red Ribbon Week.

Red Ribbon Week, observed between October 23rd and 31st, is the nation’s oldest and most significant drug prevention awareness initiative. This observance carries special weight in California, as the state legislature has enacted House Resolution 53 (HR 53), underscoring our collective commitment to leading drug-free lives.

The origins of Red Ribbon Week are rooted in a tragic moment in history. It commemorates the sacrifice of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was brutally tortured and killed by drug traffickers while investigating them in Mexico. In honor of his legacy and in remembrance of all those who have lost their lives in the battle against drugs, we wear red ribbons throughout October to symbolize our pledge to maintain a drug-free lifestyle.

For families with children in Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, I encourage participation in the DEA Red Ribbon Patch Program. This initiative allows scouts to earn a patch while contributing to a vital cause.

I want to reaffirm my commitment to being available for any state government-related inquiries or support you may need. Let us strive to build a strong and drug-free future for our children. Please take the pledge and let your voices be heard during this significant Red Ribbon Week.

Earthquake Preparedness

Earthquake Preparedness

Did you feel that? Earthquakes are common in the San Fernando Valley. While we cannot prevent them, we can take steps to reduce their harm. Preparation, caution, and staying informed ensure you and your loved ones stay safe.

Preparation Tips:

  1. Create and discuss a safety plan and meeting point with your family, friends, and neighbors.
  1. Make sure your earthquake kit is up to date:
  • Water for three days (1 gallon/person/day)
  • Nonperishable food for at least three days
  • 3-day supplies for pets
  • Flashlights
  • Cell Phone Chargers, including power banks
  • Prescription Medications
  • Important Documents
  • Extra Glasses
  • Radio (battery-powered or hand crank)
  • Cash, as ATMs may not be working
  • First Aid Kit
  • Spare set of clothes and blankets
  1. Download the myShake app to sign up for California Earthquake Alerts.
  1. During an earthquake:
  • Drop, cover, and hold
  • Resist the urge to run outside and avoid buildings, streetlights, and utility wires.
  • Stay clear of windows
  • Avoid using elevators
  • Prepare for aftershocks over the next few hours and weeks

After the shaking stops, check for injuries and keep a safe distance from affected areas until they are deemed secure.
