ARLETA –Assemblywoman Luz Rivas (D-Arleta) has issued the following statement on the riots that took place at the United States Capitol:
“The events that unfolded yesterday at our nation’s Capitol run contrary to the very principles our country was founded on. Yesterday’s actions were incited by an unhinged President, who has attempted to subvert the will of the people through encouraging civil unrest to overturn a lawful vote of the people to elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the next President and Vice-President of this great country, were beyond disgraceful.
Never before have we seen the chaos and violence that took place over the transition of power from one president to another, whether it be a transition from a democratic party or a republican party. It is truly astonishing to witness the hypocrisy of these domestic terrorists as their government was in session to act on the same grievances that the protestors expressed about the validity of the election.
I strongly condemn those who stormed the congressional building and I vehemently denounce President Trump and the Republican elected officials who perpetuated lies and misinformation, including those who stood idly by, which resulted in the unnecessary death and injury of Americans.
While yesterday will always be a dark stain on our nation’s history, we will come out of this stronger. The United States of America is resilient, and although we may have differing viewpoints from time to time, our collective belief in the core values that this nation was founded on will once again allow us to be a country that is indivisible with liberty and justice for all.”
Assemblywoman Luz Rivas proudly represents the 39th Assembly District, which includes the City of Los Angeles communities of Arleta, Lake View Terrace, Granada Hills, Mission Hills, North Hollywood, Pacoima, Sun Valley, Sunland-Tujunga, Sylmar, and the City of San Fernando.
